NightGuards
About Night Guards
You may know us for our smile transformations, but at MINT dentistry, we are also focused on protecting your teeth from damage. Teeth grinding and jaw clenching (also known as bruxism) at night is a common issue that causes damage to your teeth, gums, and jaw. While the most visible sign of damage is wear or damage to the surface of the teeth, nocturnal bruxism can also cause headaches, tooth pain, facial inflammation, plus pain in your jaw and neck. MINT dentistry's team of board-certified dentists offers custom night guards that can protect your mouth while you sleep. Custom night guards are made with high-quality materials utilizing state-of-the-art technology to fit you comfortably and prevent damage from teeth grinding and jaw clenching, helping you to achieve a better night’s sleep. Best Candidates
There are many signs that you are grinding your teeth and/or clenching your jaw at night. You may be a candidate for a night guard if you often wake up with a headache in addition to pain, swelling, or tightness in your jaw. Other signs that may suggest the need for a night guard include loose teeth or fillings, worn-down enamel on the tops of your back teeth, tooth sensitivity, and a receding gumline. Teeth grinding and jaw clenching while you sleep are typically caused by stress, but it may also be the result of a bite misalignment, allergies, a sleep disorder, or temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD). When a member of our highly skilled dental team is diagnosing bruxism, we will also try to determine the cause of the condition so we can create a comprehensive treatment plan.
What to Expect
To diagnose bruxism and determine if you would benefit from a night guard, our team will perform a thorough dental examination. You can relax in one of our treatment chairs wearing MINT sunglasses and listening to your favorite music through Beats headphones while the exam is performed. After the MINT dentistry team diagnoses your bruxism, we will take impressions and digital x-rays of your mouth so your custom night guard can be designed. MINT dentistry will send this information to a dental laboratory where your night guard will be crafted out of high-quality materials with advanced technology. When your night guard is sent back to our office, you will be scheduled for a fitting. A member of the MINT dentistry team may make minor adjustments to your night guard to ensure it fits comfortably. We will also give you instructions on how to care for your night guard, so it remains in great condition for a long time.
Treatment Aftercare
For your night guard to work effectively, you will need to wear it every night or as recommended by our dental professionals. Your night guard should minimize or eliminate the pain and dental problems caused by bruxism, but if not, please contact our office so we can address the problem immediately. To help keep your mouth and night guard healthy, you should clean your teeth and guard before and after each use. Your night guard should be brought in to all future appointments so we can make adjustments or repairs as needed.
The MINT Commitment
If you have been diagnosed with nocturnal bruxism or jaw clenching, part of the cost of your night guard will likely be covered by your dental insurance. If you have PPO dental insurance, our office will contact your provider to determine your coverage and benefits. During your consultation, a MINT dentistry team member will discuss cost estimates. To help make your treatment more affordable, MINT dentistry accepts numerous forms of payment and we can help you find medical financing. Our practice is committed to helping patients of all ages and stages of life get great dental care. If you do not have PPO dental insurance, ask our team about the MINT Discount Plan.
